American Foxhound breed guide

AKC calls American Foxhounds good-natured, low-maintenance hounds that get on well with kids, dogs and even cats but come with special considerations for prospective owners.

The breed is closely associated with Revolutionary heroes and the rolling estates of old Virginia.

American Foxhound temperament

Sleek, long-limbed hunters with large soft eyes and a gentle, pleading expression, American Foxhounds are easygoing and amiable. They also turn stubborn and independent, AKC says, so training takes patience.

A single-minded prey drive must be managed and the loud bawling pleases hound lovers. Raised in the home, American Foxhounds are very mild-tempered and devoted.

American Foxhound lifespan

American Foxhounds live 11 to 13 years. AKC says breeders test for hip dysplasia and thrombocytopathy, a blood disorder and the long ears need regular checks for foreign matter and wax. Regular brushing keeps the teeth healthy too.

American Foxhound care

The short coat lies close to the body. Its hard texture protects the dog in underbrush. It is extremely easy to care for: a short once-a-week session with a bristle brush, rubber grooming mitt or hound glove is usually all it needs.

American Foxhounds were bred to chase prey for long hours, so AKC says a solid hour or two of exercise every day is needed or the dog may get bored and destructive. As scenthounds they may never be safe off leash, because their noses can lead them into trouble.

American Foxhound history

George Washington was an avid foxhunter who kept a pack of hounds bred from British stock. Life at Mount Vernon followed the customs of British country estates and the traditional English foxhunt was one of the British institutions he upheld.

You can tell the American Foxhound from its English cousin by longer, more finely boned legs and a slightly arched loin.
