English Setter temperament
The merry English Setter is known as the gentleman of the dog world but is game and boisterous at play. English Setters are sensible, good-natured and devoted companions.
They are very sensitive and take reprimands to heart, so positive reinforcement works better than punishment. Their keen nose and prey drive may lead them to follow instincts into trouble.
English Setter lifespan
English Setters live 12 years. Responsible breeders screen for elbow and hip dysplasia and deafness. The breed may experience bloat, a sudden life-threatening stomach condition and owners should learn the signs and what to do.
English Setter care
To keep the long silky coat in shape, brush at least once a week with a soft bristle brush and a long-toothed metal comb helps work through areas where tangles are starting. Left alone, tangles and mats become uncomfortable and can cause problems.
An English Setter needs regular exercise, ideally a daily vigorous run or play session in a large, securely fenced area. Owners without such an area ride a bicycle with the setter on a leash, jog with it or take long walks.
English Setter history
English Setter history goes back some 400 years, to the estates of English country gentlemen who crossed old spaniel and pointer breeds to create hunting dogs that would sit quietly or set, on finding game birds.
The breed's popularity grew in Britain and later America as reliable hunting rifles gave rise to the hunting dogs.
