German Wirehaired Pointer temperament
German Wirehaired Pointers are very intelligent, responsive and eager to please, so they are usually easy to train. AKC says early socialization helps a young one grow into a well-adjusted, well-mannered companion.
A veteran owner told AKC that the need for running in the great outdoors is a must and that the breed will not be happy without it.
German Wirehaired Pointer lifespan
German Wirehaired Pointers live 14 to 16 years. AKC says there are several breed-specific health and genetic screening considerations and responsible breeders test their stock for them.
German Wirehaired Pointer care
The harsh, wiry coat needs minimal maintenance: a weekly grooming with a comb and soft slicker brush removes dirt and loose hair. It protects against thorny underbrush and foul weather.
High-energy sporting dogs that enjoy outdoor activities with human partners, German Wirehaired Pointers make great companions on long walks and hikes and regular daily exercise such as long walks and play sessions keeps them healthy and happy.
German Wirehaired Pointer history
British sportsmen bred specialized hunting dogs for various birds, terrains and techniques, hence the profusion of British setters, spaniels and retrievers, while Continental European hunters created bird dogs capable of doing it all.
Italy's Spinone, Hungary's Vizsla and Germany's German Wirehaired Pointer are examples of those famously versatile hunting companions, sometimes called the European utility breeds.
