Norfolk Terrier breed guide
AKC calls Norfolk Terriers little, cute and loyal dogs that will gladly curl up in your lap but should never be called lapdogs, genuine terriers: feisty, confident, sturdy and game for adventure.
Among the smallest working terriers, with a hard, wiry, straight coat, the Norfolk has neatly folded ears where its cousin the Norwich has erect, pointed ears.

Norfolk Terrier temperament
Bred to work in packs, Norfolk Terriers are more gregarious than a typical terrier but keep plenty of the old terrier pep. They are very smart and bond closely with their families, though they may challenge an owner's limits, so obedience training is a must.
A very strong prey drive makes them a danger to small animals.
Norfolk Terrier lifespan
Norfolk Terriers live 12 to 16 years. AKC says breeders test for heart and eye issues and patellar luxation and regular vet checkups and parasite control help ensure a long, healthy life.
Norfolk Terrier care
A Norfolk should have a double coat of a hard outer layer over a soft undercoat that insulates against heat and cold. Hand-stripping removes old outer hairs and excess undercoat so new hair can grow in and a properly stripped wire coat has a handsome shine and rich color.
Long walks, socializing and games of fetch spend some of the Norfolk's boundless energy. With an extremely high prey drive it should be on a leash outside and have a fenced yard.
Norfolk Terrier history
Frank Roughrider Jones, an English dog breeder and horseman of the early 20th century, developed little red terriers as ratters and fox bolters. The Norwich, with ears up and the Norfolk, with ears down, were first considered one breed and in England and North America both were classified as Norwich Terriers, sometimes called Jones Terriers.
Over time the two types diverged and in 1964 the Kennel Club in England recognized the Norfolk as a distinct breed.
